Mid-sized research center solves challenge of electronic submissions
Download PDF of Complete Case StudyInstitution profileNational Jewish Medical Research Center (NJMRC) is a leading independent research organization in Denver, Colorado. NJMRC is known worldwide for treatment of patients with respiratory, immune and allergic disorders and for groundbreaking medical research, source:www.njc.org. Their estimated Federal Research funding in 2006 was approximately $60 Million and approximately 200 employees participate in the proposal development process. NJMRC has a single consolidated site location in Denver.
ChallengeSeeing the difficulties of the free, governmentally-provided applications for electronic submission to Grants.gov, NJMRC began to investigate potential vendors of integrated solutions for proposal development and submission in the spring of 2006. The business problem was to select, deploy and use a comprehensive solution to submission for the February 5, 2007, NIH submission deadline.
The decision process was collaborative, with significant input drawn from four areas: Scientists, Departmental Research Administrators, Central Office Research Administrators and Senior IT staff.
The following technical standards influenced the choice of vendors:
- An on-site deployment was required.
- Microsoft Operating Systems and MS SQL Database were required.
- Rapid deployment and training would be required for January 2007 rollout.
- Mac and PC client compatibility was essential as well as a technical solution that did not overly burden IT resources.
- Connect your Cayuse424 proposal database to other enterprise systems, such as compliance, payroll and post-award accounting.
SolutionCayuse424 was selected in November of 2006 with the following results:
- On-site Training was delivered on December 12, 2006.
- Site deployment was completed on December 28 2006.
- Rollout to staff for use occurred on January 9, 2007.
- First Electronic Submission occurred on January 25, 2007.
- Submissions completed for NIH deadline by January 31, 2007.
The results above were supported by the following Cayuse products and services:
- Cayuse424 on-site installation.
- Cayuse Research Plan templates.
- One day on-site instruction.
- Phone support and upgrade services.
BenefitsAmong the many benefits cited by NJMRC included the following:
- Flexibility of the Cayuse solution fit a wide variety of work-style
- Feedback on validations created reliable proposal submissions
- Ease-of-use promoted efficient and rapid proposal development with minimal training
- Good-to-excellent end-user acceptance among scientists
