How it All Began
The Cayuse Research ecosystem is based on the solutions first created by Dr. Chris Harker in 1994. He moved to Oregon in the early 1990’s and was an active researcher at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU).
Dr. Harker strongly believed there had to be an easier way to apply for grants which would allow more focus on the actual science. In response, Dr. Harker created the first Public Health service grant application software called Grant Slam. The software was a best-seller, proving very popular with thousands of investigators, helping them to produce their paper-based NIH grant proposals. In 2002, he received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant and commercialized the groundbreaking Cayuse 424, which launched in 2006.
Cayuse became the first vendor to successfully communicate System-to-System with Grants.gov through its flagship Cayuse 424 solution. With robust error validation, pre-population of common fields, automated budget calculations, and world-class support, Cayuse 424 quickly amassed a large and loyal customer base. Today nearly 1/3 of the top 100 research institutions in the United States utilize the solution.
In 2012, Cayuse merged with Evisions, Inc. Five years later, Cayuse split from Evisions and became a standalone company once again.
In 2018, Cayuse acquired Process Pathways, Canada’s market-leading research administration software company. Cayuse also acquired IT Works-a leader in the development and implementation of effort, financials, and grant management solutions for universities, healthcare, and independent research institutions.
Cayuse also partnered with Ex Libris’ Pivot, a tool that provides researchers with a streamlined process to find funding and collaborate with colleagues.
These acquisitions and partnerships have allowed Cayuse to develop an ecosystem of research administration solutions and now Cayuse is even
